AutoRay's content is produced by a dedicated insurance research team that analyzes auto insurance markets across all 50 states. Every recommendation is data-driven — built on rate filings, regulatory databases, and financial strength metrics, not opinions or paid placements.

What We Research

Our team covers every major dimension of auto insurance that affects what drivers pay and what coverage they receive:

Rate Analysis

We analyze rate filings submitted to state insurance departments to compare actual pricing across carriers, driver profiles, credit tiers, and geographies — not just advertised rates.

State Requirements

Every state has different minimum coverage laws, no-fault rules, and regulatory frameworks. We track requirements across all 50 states and DC, updated quarterly from state DOI sources.

Company Performance

We evaluate insurers using AM Best financial strength ratings, J.D. Power claims satisfaction studies, NAIC complaint ratios, and market share data — objective metrics, not subjective reviews.

Coverage Optimization

We research discount programs (telematics, bundling, good student, defensive driving), coverage structures, and deductible strategies that reduce premiums without creating dangerous coverage gaps.

Data Sources We Use

Every claim in our articles can be traced to a primary data source. We don't aggregate opinions — we analyze data:

  • State Insurance Department Filings — Rate tables and form filings submitted by insurers to state regulators via SERFF (System for Electronic Rates & Forms Filing). These are the actual approved rates, not marketing estimates.
  • AM Best Financial Strength Ratings — The industry standard for evaluating an insurer's ability to pay claims. We reference both the Financial Strength Rating (FSR) and the Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating (ICR).
  • J.D. Power Studies — The U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Study, Auto Insurance Study, and Insurance Shopping Study provide consumer satisfaction benchmarks based on surveys of thousands of policyholders.
  • NAIC Complaint Ratios — The National Association of Insurance Commissioners publishes complaint data normalized by market share, allowing fair comparison between large and small insurers.
  • Insurer Rate Filings & Policy Documents — We review the actual policy forms, endorsements, and rate manuals that insurers file with state regulators to verify coverage details and pricing structures.
  • Federal & State Regulatory Sources — State DOI websites, federal auto safety data (NHTSA), theft statistics (NICB), and weather/catastrophe data (NOAA) for state-specific risk factors.

Our Editorial Process

Every article published on AutoRay follows a structured process designed to ensure accuracy and usefulness:

  1. Topic research — We identify insurance questions that drivers actually search for, focusing on decisions with significant financial impact (choosing a carrier, coverage amounts, discount eligibility).
  2. Data collection — We pull current rate data, regulatory requirements, and company performance metrics from the primary sources listed above. We do not use secondary aggregator data when primary sources are available.
  3. Competitive analysis — For comparison articles, we evaluate at least 5 carriers on a standardized set of criteria: rates by profile, coverage options, available discounts, claims experience, financial strength, and digital tools.
  4. Draft and fact-check — Articles are drafted with inline citations to data sources. All rate ranges, coverage requirements, and regulatory claims are fact-checked against the primary source before publication.
  5. Publication and maintenance — Published articles are reviewed quarterly. When rate changes, regulatory updates, or market shifts occur, we update the affected content and note the revision date.

What We Don't Do

Transparency about our limitations is as important as demonstrating our strengths:

  • We don't sell insurance. AutoRay is a research and comparison site, not an insurance agency or brokerage. We cannot bind coverage or provide policy quotes.
  • We don't provide personalized advice. Our content is educational and comparative. Individual coverage decisions should consider factors specific to your situation that our general guidance may not cover.
  • We don't accept paid editorial placements. Affiliate partnerships generate revenue when readers click links and request quotes, but these relationships never influence which companies we recommend or how we rank them.
  • We don't use unverifiable data. If we can't trace a claim to a named, publicly available source, we don't publish it. "According to industry experts" is not a citation.

Updates and Corrections

Insurance markets change constantly. Rates are refiled, regulations are amended, and companies merge or exit markets. We review all content on a quarterly cycle and update when material changes occur.

If you find an error or outdated information on this site, please email [email protected]. We publish corrections promptly and note the correction date on the affected article.
