Editorial Policy

How we maintain editorial independence and accuracy.

Editorial Independence

AutoRay's editorial content is produced independently of our advertising and affiliate partnerships. Our research team evaluates insurers based on publicly available data — rate filings, financial strength ratings, customer satisfaction scores, and policy terms — not on commercial relationships.

Specifically:

  • Affiliate partnerships do not influence an insurer's ranking, rating, or inclusion in our guides
  • We recommend companies we have no affiliate relationship with when the data supports it
  • No insurer can pay for a higher ranking, a favorable review, or exclusion of a competitor
  • Our editorial team does not report to or receive direction from the business team regarding content recommendations

Affiliate Disclosure

AutoRay earns revenue through affiliate commissions when readers click links on our site and purchase insurance policies or request quotes. This is how we fund our research and keep the site free for readers.

We disclose affiliate relationships clearly:

  • A site-wide disclosure appears in the footer of every page
  • Individual articles note when links are affiliate links
  • Our full affiliate disclosure page explains the relationship in detail

Accuracy Standards

All factual claims in our articles must be verifiable against primary sources. Our standards require:

Rate Data

  • Rate ranges must be sourced from state insurance department filings, insurer rate pages, or published industry data
  • We present ranges (e.g., "$95-$130/mo"), not false-precision point estimates, to reflect the inherent variability in insurance pricing
  • We explicitly note that quoted rates are averages and that individual premiums depend on personal factors

Coverage Requirements

  • State minimum coverage requirements are verified against state DOI websites
  • Regulatory details (tort system, mandatory coverages, PIP rules) are verified against state statutes

Company Ratings

  • Financial strength ratings cite AM Best
  • Customer satisfaction ratings cite J.D. Power studies or NAIC complaint data
  • Claims about company features (discounts, apps, coverage options) are verified against the insurer's current website and policy documents

Update Policy

Insurance markets change constantly. Our update policy ensures content stays current:

  • Quarterly reviews — every article is reviewed at least once per quarter for accuracy
  • Event-driven updates — major rate changes, regulatory shifts, or company changes trigger immediate updates
  • Date transparency — every article displays its publication and last-updated date
  • No zombie content — articles that can't be updated to reflect current conditions are removed or flagged as outdated

Corrections Policy

We take errors seriously. When we identify or are notified of an error:

  1. The error is investigated within 48 hours
  2. If confirmed, the article is updated with correct information
  3. Material corrections are noted at the top of the article with the correction date
  4. The person who reported the error is notified of the outcome (if contact info was provided)

What We Don't Do

  • We don't provide personalized insurance advice — we provide research and comparisons to help you make your own decision
  • We don't sell insurance policies — we link to insurers and quote services where you can get your own rate
  • We don't guarantee savings — rates depend on your individual profile
  • We don't accept payment for reviews — all editorial content is independent
